The Power of Place

May 2015 – June 2015

On the theme: This exhibition was carried out in collaboration with ALL RISE in the Cascade neighborhood of Seattle, WA, a neighborhood currently experiencing rapid changes due to the influx of big tech businesses. We worked with a wide array of neighborhood stakeholders and asked: What is the “sense of place” in the Cascade Neighborhood? Which voices shape public understanding of the Cascade Neighborhood? Are there invisible/inaudible voices that may complicate our understanding of “place” in this neighborhood? Our goal was to highlight 1) the confluence of meanings associated with experiences of the neighborhood and 2) how these meanings all play a role in constructing the story of the Cascade neighborhood.

On the theme: Museums are known for labeling. How does that impact our experience of objects and art?  What happens when we label people in and outside of museums? How have people labeled you and how do you label yourself?
