Editors Priya Frank (Seattle Art Museum) and Theresa Sotto (Hammer Museum) are seeking chapter authors to “From Small Wins to Sweeping Change: Internal Initiatives to Foster Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism in Museums,” to inform a book proposal for the American Alliance of Museums with an anticipated publication date of 2022.
This call for proposals is open through 11:59 PST on DECEMBER 15, 2020. Selected authors will be notified by FEBRUARY 1, 2021.
Overview of the Proposal: Museum practitioners have been having conversations about diversity and equity in museums for decades. In the past few years, the words diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) have proliferated in countless articles, panel presentations, and local and national conference programs. In recent months, after the murder of George Floyd sparked protests worldwide, museums are being called upon to establish anti-racist initiatives and take action in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. In order to move beyond buzzwords and solidarity statements and take proactive steps to foster inclusive environments, museums of all types are forming cross-departmental working groups to examine their internal practices and hiring processes, and ultimately foster a more inclusive and equitable environment for both visitors and staff alike.
