Diversity Committee (DivCom) Events at AAM 2016

The 2016 American Alliance of Museum conference is quickly approaching! This year, the conference will be held Thursday May 26 through Sunday May 29 in Washington D.C. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be promoting different events and gatherings that are on our radar. Today, we are excited to share a series of events we have been coordinating through our involvement with AAM’s Diversity Committee (DIVCOM). We hope to see you there!

Thursday 5/26 6-8 p.m. | Mexican Cultural Institute | Registration Required

Creativity and innovation grow out of collaborations strengthened by diverse perspectives. This reception brings together members of the Latino, Indigenous Peoples and Museums, Asian Pacific American networks, as well as the Diversity (DIVCOM), LGBTQ, and PIC Green committees. Join this diverse group of museum professionals for participatory activities, engaging discussions, as well as food, drinks, and live music. All are welcome; you do not need to be a member of one of these professional networks to participate.

Join AAM staff, board members and Professional Networks – DivCom, LGBTQ Alliance and the Latino, Asian Pacific American, and Indigenous Peoples Museum Networks for a participatory conversation on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within AAM and the broader museum community. Participants will be asked to share suggestions and promising practices for advancing AAM’s Diversity and Inclusion Policy as well as promoting substantive and long-term changes in our workplaces and across our field.

Saturday 5/28 3-6 p.m. | The Octagon | Registration Required, Transportation Provided

Join DIVCOM (The AAM Diversity Professional Network) at the Octagon Museum, located one block west of the White House, for a staff-led, behind-the-scenes tour that will highlight the 200-year history of the building, the role of enslaved people in the building’s time as a household and the Architects Foundation’s efforts to incorporate and activate social justice in the work of the Octagon.

Saturday 5/28 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. | Old Ebbitt Grill
Join us for an informal post-field trip meet up at DC’s historic Old Ebbitt Grill! We will have a table reserved for a large group  and you can join us whether or not you were able to make it to the Octagon House Museum Tour. Seating is limited to 20, but there is some additional standing space. No need to RSVP. We look forward to meeting you!
